All of my K-5 classes are currently working on a large underwater mural for the Small Theater area. By using just three colors ( yellow, red and blue), we created very special hand painted papers. The first step, reinforced color mixing skills. Then students used elements of design to create patterns on the papers. Different designs are drawn on the backs of the hand painted papers, and collages are created in the style of Eric Carle. In a few weeks, this underwater ocean should be full of life and ready for viewing!
The first three art lessons this year, began with creating “Masterpieces.” Each week, students were given two different primary colors and asked to mix each secondary color family. ( oranges, greens, violets ) While color mixing the secondary colors, students were told to explore what the brush could do and paint organic shapes. Some of the finished “Masterpieces,” can be seen hung up throughout the halls. The others have been transformed into the “floor of the ocean” in our underwater mural.
We used a “Treasure Hunt” to critique the finished “Masterpieces.” Students were asked to identify and explain the following:
-the elements of art ( line, shape, form)
-principles of design ( repetition, contrast, color)
-find moods ( What looks peaceful, happy, chaotic?)
-find “Looks Like” ( Find something that looks like wind, fur, footprint)
-color theory (find complementary colors, cool/warm colors, analogous colors)
-how to find a balanced composition “Frame it!”
*There are no wrong answers but students must explain their thinking.
