This project idea was to create a cut paper relief mural with an underwater theme. All 371 of my students in grades K-5 participated in this mural. Each child experienced mixing two different primary colors to make each secondary color family (oranges, greens, and violets). They explored simple color theory and special effects to create a wide variety of special hand painted papers ( Complementary colors, repeating patterns, textured paper, two-sided paper ) All papers were made with only three colors: yellow, turquoise and magenta.
Students worked together to create plants, animals or objects from an underwater scene. Their creations incorporated symmetry, contrasting colors, repetition, patterns, 3-D forms. Cutting skills like curling, fringe, pop-ups, snowflakes, and bridges were were used in the creations.
All kindergartners drew and cut out starfish. Then they located a rock with the opposite color on the color wheel (to make the image pop out) and we stapled it down. Many students paired up to design sea urchins, seahorses, fish, turtles and other sea creatures. Some small groups worked together on larger items like a shark, a sunken ship or a treasure chest.
